Trump Tweets Migrant Caravans Are “Marching Toward Our Country” Ahead Of State Of The Union

On Sunday, President Donald Trump yet again stoked fear about migrant caravans just days before his State of the Union Address.

“With Caravans marching through Mexico and toward our Country, Republicans must be prepared to do whatever is necessary for STRONG Border Security,” Trump wrote on Twitter Sunday evening. “Dems do nothing. If there is no Wall, there is no Security. Human Trafficking, Drugs and Criminals of all dimensions – KEEP OUT!”

The State of the Union speech is scheduled to air at 9 p.m. EST on several major television networks. Former Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams will deliver the Democratic rebuttal.

SLIDESHOW: DONALD TRUMP’S 30 CRAZIEST TWEETS

Trump has tweeted or publicly ranted about what he perceives as drug-running criminal migrant caravans multiple times before, just as conservative news outlets like Fox News have over the last year. Last fall, the president drew severe criticism for his fear-mongering comments about Latin American immigrants in the weeks leading up to the midterm elections. He even sent more than 5,000 troops to the southern border to stop the caravan and threatened the migrants could be shot if they attacked the troops.

This also all comes amid Trump’s insistence on requesting $5.7 billion in funds for the U.S.-Mexico border wall, something Democratic lawmakers refuse to approve. A standoff over the issue led to a record-breaking, 35-day government shutdown. that cost the U.S. economy roughly $11 billion.

A CBS News poll from Sunday showed 66 percent of voters believe Trump shouldn’t declare a national emergency if he fails to get Congress to agree to wall funding, while 73 percent say that should a deal on the issue not be reached by Feb. 3, talks should proceed to keep the federal government open. The government is funded until Feb. 15.
