Rudy Giuliani shocked NBC’s Meet the Press host Chuck Todd on Sunday by claiming that “truth isn’ truth,” and Twitter quickly erupted with users taking jabs at the former New York City mayor.

On Monday, Giuliani tweeted the following clarification of his remark:

Giuliani, one of President Donald Trump‘s lawyers, was explaining his concerns over special counsel Robert Mueller potentially interviewing Trump as part of the probe into Russian meddling in the 2016 election and possible collusion between Trump campaign officials and the Russian government.

DONALD TRUMP’S 30 CRAZIEST TWEETS

“Look, I am not going to be rushed into having him testify so that he gets trapped into perjury,” Giuliani said of Trump on Meet the Press. “And when you tell me that, you know, he should testify because he’s going to tell the truth and he shouldn’t worry, well that’s so silly because it’s somebody’s version of the truth. Not the truth.”

At that point, Todd interrupted the former prosecutor and said: “Truth is truth. I don’t mean to go like…”

Giuliani then interjected by dismissing Todd’s rebuttal and saying: “No, it isn’t truth. Truth isn’t truth. The President of the United States says, ‘I didn’t…'”

“Truth isn’t truth? Mr. Mayor, do you realize what I…”

After laughing nervously and putting his head down to his hand, Todd simply added: “Mr. Mayor, this is going to become a bad meme.”

The Meet the Press host wasn’t entirely wrong, as Twitter users almost immediately began mocking Giuliani for his comments, which many said were reminiscent of the world created by George Orwell in 1984.

Among the famous individuals who fired back at Giuliani were former FBI Director James Comeyjournalist Dan Rather and author Stephen King.
