Poll Shows Nearly Half Of Voters Trust Nancy Pelosi More Than Donald Trump

A new poll released Tuesday reveals more American voters trust House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) than President Donald Trump with regards to “issues that are important to” them.

The Quinnipiac survey determined that 49 percent of voters trust Pelosi more than Trump to solve “issues that are important to you.” Meanwhile, 42 percent stated they trust the president more than veteran Democrat.

The results of the poll are even more divided when separating voters by political party. Among Americans who identified as Republicans, 88 percent confided more in Trump, whereas 91 percent of Democratic participants said they trusted Pelosi more.

Among independent voters, more respondents placed their trust in Pelosi for key issues. Around 49 percent of independents revealed they had more faith in the Democratic leader than in the president, and 36 percent of independents stated they trust Trump more.

The survey comes after a 35-day government shutdown — the longest one in U.S. history — that ended on Friday after Trump signed a bill that excluded funds for his U.S.-Mexico border wall, for which he had asked $5.7 billion. Polls released during the shutdown revealed around 47 percent of voters blamed Trump and Republican lawmakers like Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY), the Senate majority leader, for the shutdown. The government is now funded through Feb. 15, which means that if Trump decides to close it again, around 800,000 federal workers could be furloughed or left without pay for a second indefinite stretch. Acting White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney said in an interview Sunday that Trump was prepared to shut down the government again.

Regarding border security, the Quinnipiac poll showed 50 percent of respondents trusted Democratic lawmakers more than Trump. Only 41 percent said they trusted the president more on this issue.

In total, 1,0004 Americans participated in Quinnipiac’s survey. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.7 percentage points.
