Trump Mocks Late Sen. John McCain For Obamacare Repeal Vote, Sharing Steele Dossier With FBI

President Donald Trump over the weekend blasted and mocked late Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) on Twitter over several subjects.

Trump had long criticized the former Republican lawmaker and prisoner of war, who died in August at age 81 following a battle with brain cancer. McCain’s family and friends from both sides of the political spectrum rushed to defend him amid the president’s tweets.

Trump’s latest posts followed angry tweets about Saturday Night Live and Friday’s terror attacks on two mosques in New Zealand, an act that killed 49 people. The perpetrator of the attacks was found to have been a right-wing white nationalist who mentioned Trump in his manifesto.

The president appeared to refer to reports that court documents revealed an aide for McCain had shared with the media and the FBI a dossier on Trump’s alleged ties to Russia.

“He had far worse ‘stains’ than this, including thumbs down on repeal and replace after years of campaigning to repeal and replace!” Trump wrote about McCain on Saturday afternoon, referencing the Arizona Republican’s vote against the GOP attempt to repeal the Affordable Care Act in 2017. McCain was diagnosed with brain cancer following a blood clot in his eye in July 2017 amidst the party’s vote on Obamacare.

“So it was indeed (just proven in court papers) ‘last in his class’ (Annapolis) John McCain that sent the Fake Dossier to the FBI and Media hoping to have it printed BEFORE the Election,” Trump then tweeted Sunday morning.

“He & the Dems, working together, failed (as usual),” he added. “Even the Fake News refused this garbage!”

The late Senator’s daughter Meghan McCain fired back at Trump on Twitter by saying how much more beloved her father was than him, and by urging the president to leave her family alone and spend more time with his instead of tweeting.

“No one will ever love you the way they loved my father…. I wish I had been given more Saturday’s with him. Maybe spend yours with your family instead of on twitter obsessing over mine?” the 34-year-old The View co-host wrote.

Trump first mocked McCain just days after announcing his presidential campaign in June 2015, saying the former Vietnam veteran wasn’t a “war hero,” but had only been given that distinction “because he was captured.” Then-candidate Trump drew severe backlash for his remarks about McCain.

Sen. Lindsay Graham (R-S.C.), one of McCain’s closes friends, also defended his late fellow Republican on Twitter on Sunday.

Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.), who is believed to be a prospective Democratic 2020 presidential candidate, also blasted Trump on Twitter for not denouncing white nationalists in the wake of the New Zealand attacks.
