Michael Cohen Starts 3-Year Prison Sentence, Takes Shot At Trump For “Xenophobia” & “Lies”

Michael Cohen began his three-year prison sentence in New York on Monday, and took a jab at President Donald Trump while doing so.

Cohen, 52, was sentenced in December for crimes that include tax evasion, campaign finance violations and lying to Congress. Earlier this year, Trump’s former personal lawyer testified before lawmakers about work he performed for the real estate mogul over the years.

“I hope that when I rejoin my family and friends that the country will be in a place without xenophobia, injustice and lies at the helm of our country,” Cohen told reporters. “There still remains much to be told, and I look forward to the day where I can share the truth.”

Cohen reported to the Federal Correctional Institution in Otisville, New York. Trump’s former “fixer” was so loyal to the president that he once said he would “take a bullet” for the former Apprentice host. Since then, Cohen has publicly expressed regret for his longstanding blind loyalty to Trump, which led to him lying to several people and using threats and other intimidation tactics. He also exposed Trump as a “racist” and a “con-man” in his congressional testimony.

SLIDESHOW: TOP DEMOCRATS RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT IN 2020

Trump’s family, including his eldest son Donald Trump Jr., have mocked Cohen since he was sentenced. Trump Jr. even derided him by saying, “maybe you’ll share a cell with Michael Avenatti,” referring to the attorney who famously defended porn star Stormy Danielswith whom Trump had an extramarital affair in 2006. Cohen admitted to helping arrange hush money payments to Daniels before the 2016 election.

After more than a year of blasting Trump and Cohen and becoming a liberal celebrity — who was even briefly speculated to run for president in 2020 — Avenatti eventually fell from grace after he was accused of domestic violence and was charged with tax fraud, extortion and more in a financial corruption scandal involving his business ties with apparel giant Nike.
