Pete Buttigieg Climbs To Third In 2020 New Hampshire Poll

Pete Buttigieg, the mayor of South Bend, Indiana, has jumped to third in a new poll from New Hampshire that ranks support for 2020 Democratic presidential candidates.

According to the Saint Anselm College Survey Center poll, former Vice President Joe Biden leads the pack with 22.9 percent support — even though he still hasn’t formally announced a 2020 run — and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) is in second with 15.6 percent. Buttigieg came in third with 10.7 percent support. Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) followed in fourth and fifth place with 8.7 percent and 6.8 percent, respectively.

New Hampshire is the site of one of the first primary races in election years. Buttigieg also ranked third among 2020 Democratic candidates in a recent Iowa poll.

Buttigieg, the youngest 2020 presidential candidate thus far at age 37, has gained higher name recognition in recent weeks, with appearances on several talk shows and town halls. The openly gay former Afghanistan war veteran, who is also religious, has impressed due to his intellectual nature and his strong record as the mayor of South Bend. Buttigieg has also fiercely criticized President Donald Trump and Mike President Mike Pence, who famously holds many anti-gay views.

This week, Buttigieg blasted Evangelical voters for their continued support of Trump despite his long track record of not following Christian values like faithfulness to one’s spouse and looking out for the poor.

“It’s something that really frustrates me because the hypocrisy is unbelievable,” Buttigieg said on Meet the Press. 

Buttgieg also fired back on Twitter at Trump’s claim that the United States can’t take in any more immigrants because it’s “full.” The mayor of South Bend noted that his town has had a shrinking population in recent years and shared a link to a New York Times article that showed Trump’s claim is false, as many states have seen falling birthrates and aging populations, a combination that has harmed the work force.

 

The Saint Anselm poll surveyed 698 registered New Hampshire voters between April 3 and April 8. The survey contains a margin of error of 3.7 percentage points.
