On Sunday, President Donald Trump‘s attorneys realized that they are not completely aware of everything White House counsel Donald McGahn told special counsel Robert Mueller‘s team of investigators.
According to the New York Times, Trump’s legal team never requested a full description of everything McGahn told Mueller and his team. McGahn was reportedly interviewed for 30 hours, and painted Trump in both a positive and negative light, although he said he believed Trump did not overstep his legal rights as president.
The Times revealed in a detailed article that McGahn has been cooperating “extensively” with Mueller on the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election. The newspaper reported that McGahn and his attorney decided to cooperate with the special counsel because they were concerned that Trump “was setting up McGahn to take the blame for any possible wrongdoing.”
In an interview with NBC’s Meet the Press on Sunday, Rudy Giuliani — one of Trump’s lawyers — said he only knew part of what McGahn had told Mueller, and that he only learned about this through John Dowd, one of the president’s former attorneys who was reportedly in favor of Trump and his team completely cooperating with the special counsel.

“I’ll use [Dowd’s] words rather than mine, that McGahn was a strong witness for the president, so I don’t need to know much more about that,” Giulani said on Meet the Press. The former New York City mayor did not explicitly deny the veracity of the Times piece about McGahn’s cooperation with Mueller in his television interview.
Former U.S. attorney and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, who was previously a staunch ally of the president, said on ABC News’ This Week that he believes McGahn’s lawyer put him in a tough spot.
“Once you waive that privilege and you turn over all those documents, Don McGahn has no choice then but to go in and answer everything, every question they could ask him,” said Christie. “It’s bad legal advice, bad lawyering, and this is a result of it.”
