In an interview with uPolitics, Brandon Wolf, the spokesman for the Human Rights Campaign, spoke about their efforts to oppose former President Donald Trump and his running mate Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio), as well as the potential impact a second Trump administration could have on LGBTQ communities.

The Human Rights Campaign, which launched its We Show Up and Equality Wins campaign in May, has committed $15 million to the election, focusing much of it on battleground states. They have also identified 75 million equality voters – those who prioritize LGBTQ+ policies.

The campaign “acknowledges that MAGA has not attacked the LGBTQ+ community because they think we’re weak, they have pulled at our freedoms, torn at our civil liberties, because they are terrified at just how powerful we are as a community,” said Wolf.

“And that $15 million investment,” he added, “means we’re doing all the things necessary to win an election…We’re doing everything we can to mobilize that universe of equality voters to show up to the polls in November.”

Wolf emphasized the high stakes of the upcoming November election at all levels, warning of the harmful effects a second Trump administration could have on LGBTQ+ rights.

“Donald Trump led the most anti-LGBTQ+ administration in history…He spent the four years in office relentlessly targeting LGBTQ+ people, using our community as a punching bag, and it’s clear that he’ll go even further should he get another chance to lead this country,” said Wolf.

Wolf highlighted the Project 2025 agenda, describing it as “riddled with anti-LGBTQ+ plans.”

“It wants to use the government as a tool of propaganda to promote heterosexuality as the ‘ideal lifestyle’ and then it wants to target benefits for same-sex couples,” stated Wolf.

Wolf also addressed what he called “the MAGA obsession with how other people live their lives,” labeling it “bizarre” and “creepy.”

“I think JD Vance thinks more about whether I’m going to have biological children than I’ve ever thought about it in my life and that is disturbing,” said Wolf.

“It speaks to this broader agenda of control…The MAGA collective belief is that there is only one right way to be a human being. And they will use the power of government as a weapon against you to force you to comply,” he added.

Wolf stressed the importance of Democratic control at all levels of government, from the White House to Congress and state legislatures.

“Every single one of those levers of power matters…You start to win these seats with LGBTQ+ candidates and you’re well on your way to retaking the House of Representatives and putting a pro-equality majority in place,” he said.

“We also have to hold onto our Senate majority…And that too has huge implications on the LGBTQ+ community.”

“We have to win on a state legislature level. We have to win on a school board level because our freedoms matter up and down the ticket. Our freedoms matter on every level of government,” said Wolf.
