Education Secretary Betsy DeVos
Former President Donald Trump’s Secretary of Education, Betsy DeVos, recently claimed that America would be better off without the Department of Education.
She made the statements during a speech at the inaugural Moms for Liberty summit.
“I personally think the Department of Education should not exist,” DeVos said.
Devos was a proponent of “education freedom,” which is a movement that focuses on allowing parents to use vouchers to send children to non-government schools.

School choice has been a Republican rallying cry since the onset of what conservatives call the “culture war” began. In recent months, conversations about LGBTQ rights and sexual orientation have been banned by Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-Florida) in his state.
The controversy has ushered in a wave of conservative parents who want to send their children to more religiously oriented schools.
DeVos has been a fervent supporter of a more decentralized education system. During her controversial four-year tenure as the Secretary of Education, she drastically cut funding for public schools and favored giving vouchers to parents.
“I fight against anyone who would have government be the parent to everyone,” DeVos stated in 2020.
