Cindy McCain, John McCain’s Widow, Endorses Joe Biden For President

Cindy McCain, the wife of the late senator and 2008 presidential candidate John McCain, has officially endorsed former Democratic Vice President Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election.

On Tuesday, McCain publicly announced on Twitter her support of Biden over current Republican President Donald Trump. This endorsement comes after she appeared in a video tribute about Biden that emphasized their friendship, as well as national security and working with both parties being some of his top priorities.

“We are Republicans, yes, but Americans foremost,” she wrote, “Joe and I don’t always agree on the issues…but he is a good and honest man.”

McCain continued to write, “(Joe) will be a commander in chief that the finest fighting force in the history of the world can depend on, because he knows what it is like to send a child off to fight.”

McCain is not the only Republican crossing the aisle in support of Biden; last month, more than 100 former McCain staffers came forward to endorse Biden. They explained that Trump had a “lack of competent leadership…(and) efforts to aggravate rather than bridge divisions among Americans,” in their statement of support.

Biden tweeted Tuesday that he was “deeply honored to have (Cindy’s) support and friendship,” and reiterated that “this election is bigger than any one political party.”

McCain’s endorsement likely has a lot to do with Trump’s disrespectful comments towards her late husband, as well as his opinions on American soldiers who have died in service. John McCain served in Vietnam and was a prisoner of war; their son, Jack, was serving in Afghanistan when his father died.

In 2015, Trump stated that John McCain was “no hero…I like people who weren’t captured.”
