Nancy Pelosi Rules Out Censure To Reprimand Trump For Alleged Misconduct: “It’s Just A Way Out”

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-California) revealed Wednesday she does not believe censuring President Donald Trump is an appropriate solution for addressing his alleged misconduct.

Pelosi, who up until recently had resisted calls from several Democrats for impeaching Trump, appeared to slightly change her tune this week, saying: “I think censure is just a way out. In other words, if the goods are there, you must impeach.”

Censure is a rare, formal rebuke lawmakers can utilize to reprimand a sitting president, although it is less harsh  of a punishment than impeachment, a move that requires two-thirds majority approval from both houses of Congress, among other things.

“Censure is nice but it is not commensurate with the violations of the Constitution should we decide that’s the way to go,” Pelosi added. “That’s a day at the beach for the President, or at his golf club or wherever he goes.”

Pelosi insisted impeachment proceedings against Trump should only begin once more concrete evidence of wrongdoing is presented. She had also previously said such a move would divide the country unless there was significant bipartisan support for it in Congress.

Since former Special Counsel Robert Mueller released his full Russian interference probe report in April, multiple Democratic lawmakers and one Republican, Rep. Justin Amash (R-Michigan), have demanded an impeachment inquiry into Trump be launched.
