Trump Impeachment Support Stays Unchanged At 50% After Impeachment Hearings With 43% Opposed

Support for President Donald Trump‘s impeachment remains unchanged from October even after five days of public hearings about his dealings with Ukraine, a new poll reveals.

According to a CNN survey conducted by SSRS, half of Americans (50%) believe Trump should be impeached and removed from office, while 43% are against this move. The poll also shows 87% of Republicans oppose impeaching Trump, down from 90% last month but still higher than the 80% rate in September.

Independent voters were heavily split on the issue of impeachment, with 47% in favor and 45% against. On both sides, 9 in 10 respondents said they feel strongly about their opinion.

The CNN survey also shows that more women than ever before now back Trump’s impeachment. In total, 61% of women now support impeaching the president and removing him from office, compared to 56% in October and 51% in May. A majority of men (53%) still say they are against impeachment.

The new poll also found 53% or respondents said Trump improperly utilized his office for political gain, a four-point increase from October. Additionally, 56% said they believed Trump’s pressure campaign on Ukraine to probe Joe Biden and his son was carried out more to help himself than to curb Ukrainian corruption.

Finally, the CNN poll showed 48% of respondents said they believe there is enough evidence for House lawmakers to vote for impeaching Trump and send the case to the Senate for a trial, while 47% said there is still insufficient evidence. Slightly more than half of respondents (52%) said Democrats have not been abusing their constitutional authority throughout the impeachment inquiry.

The CNN poll was conducted among a random national sample of 1,007 adults contacted via landlines or cellphones. The survey has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.7%.
