51% Of Americans Think Trump Is Racist, New Quinnipiac Poll Shows

A Quinnipiac University poll released this week reveals just over half (51%) of American voters consider President Donald Trump a racist.

The survey also found 45% of voters believe Trump is not racist. A similar poll conducted in the summer of 2018 showed 49% of Americans said Trump is a bigot, while 47% stated the opposite.

Quinnipiac’s new poll is especially jarring because according to CNN, a Harris poll from September 1968 found that 41% of voters at the time said they believed then-Alabama Gov. George Wallace was racist. Wallace was a notorious segregationist who ran for president on a platform opposing the Civil Rights Movement.

Trump has launched a number of racist and xenophobic verbal attacks on African Americans, illegal Latin American immigrants, Muslims and other ethnic and minority groups since taking office. Most recently, he told four freshman Democratic congresswomen of color last month to “go back” to their countries of origin. The president also went after the state of the city of Baltimore, a predominantly black city, in a Twitter rant this week that many people said was racist in part because Trump attacked Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Maryland), the House Oversight Committee chairman whose district mostly contains areas of Baltimore.

According to CNN, Trump’s approval rating among all voters is still hovering at around 43%.

Trump’s racially insensitive comments began in the early days of his 2016 campaign, when he called Mexican immigrants “rapists” and drug-dealers. He has also called for a ban on people from Muslim-majority countries and sought to prevent refugees from seeking asylum in the United States even if they can prove they are fleeing war or persecution.
