Unlike Trump, Biden & Harris Release Tax Returns To Public

President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden released their 2020 tax returns to the public on Tuesday. Vice President Kamala Harris and her husband Douglas Emhoff followed suit.

All presidents since Watergate have had their tax returns audited by the IRS. Nonetheless, Biden’s team says the upcoming audit did not affect the current president’s decision. White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said, “I would expect that we will continue to release the president’s tax returns, as should be expected by every President of the United States.”

The White House issued a press release, stating: “Today, the president released his 2020 federal income tax return, continuing an almost uninterrupted tradition.”

Key word: “almost.”

During the final debate of the 2020 election cycle, then Democratic challenger Biden pressed Donald Trump about his tax returns. “I released all my tax returns. Twenty-two years — go look at them,” he said. “You have not released a single solitary year of your tax return. What are you hiding? Why are you unwilling?”

Trump responded: “I’m going to release them as soon as we can. I want to do it.” At the time, Trump also claimed he was facing an IRS audit and, thus, had to hide materials from the public.

The battle over Trump’s tax returns is ongoing. Trump and congressional Democrats said in a court filing Monday that they are close to a deal resolving issues concerning congressional subpoenas of his financial records from Deutsche Bank.

The subpoena referenced here was issued in 2019 when the Supreme Court ruled that Congress has the authority to seek Trump’s financial records of his dealings with the bank.
