Trump Tweets Robert Mueller “Should Not Testify” Before Congress On Russia Probe, Sets Up Legal Battle

President Donald Trump jumped on Twitter Sunday morning to say Robert Mueller “should not testify” before Congress, hours after a top-ranking Democrat said the House Judiciary Committee was continuing its plan to set a hearing with the special counsel in the coming weeks.

“Bob Mueller should not testify. No redos for the Dems!” Trump tweeted after again blasting the nearly two-year-long probe into Russian meddling in the 2016 election.

This all comes as lawmakers continue blasting Attorney General William Barr, who refused to appear to testify before the House Judiciary Committee last week. The panel’s chairman, Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-New York) was one of several Democrats to excoriate Barr for his actions that suggest he is taking Trump’s side regarding Mueller’s report. The House is expected to hold a vote this week to decide whether or not to hold Barr in contempt for failing to appear before the Judiciary Committee and for delaying the review of Mueller’s full report. Congress’s Democratic-controlled lower chamber is believed to likely pass this vote.

SLIDESHOW: TOP DEMOCRATS RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT IN 2020

Barr previously told lawmakers he would not object to Mueller testifying before them.

On Sunday, Rep. David Cicilline (D-Rhode Island), a member of the House Judiciary Committee said in a Fox News interview that Mueller’s testimony was tentatively set for May 15, although he later took back that announcement on Twitter.

Rudy Giuliani, one of Trump’s lawyers, also weighed in on the latest development concerning Mueller by tweeting: “More evidence that Mueller probe was part of a political plan,ie., insurance policy, to remove or hurt ⁦@realDonaldTrump⁩. They failed because people wouldn’t lie.”
