Trump Questions Whether Adam Schiff Should Be Arrested For ‘Treason’ Over Ukraine Call Description

President Donald Trump suggested in a tweet on Monday he believes House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-California) could be arrested for treason for his recounting of a phone call between Trump and Ukraine’s leader in a congressional hearing last week.

“Rep. Adam Schiff illegally made up a FAKE & terrible statement, pretended it to be mine as the most important part of my call to the Ukrainian President, and read it aloud to Congress and the American people,” Trump wrote on Twitter Monday morning. “It bore NO relationship to what I said on the call. Arrest for Treason?”

In a separate tweet, Trump also called for Schiff to be “questioned at the highest level for Fraud & Treason.”

During a congressional hearing last week, Schiff interrogated acting National Intelligence Director Joseph Maguire at length over a whistleblower’s complaint of Trump’s phone call with Ukraine’s president. The House Intelligence Committee chairman summarized Trump’s remarks to the Ukrainian leader by saying, “We’ve been very good to your country, very good. No other country has done as much as we have, but you know what, I don’t see much reciprocity here. I hear what you want. I have a favor I want from you, though.”

SLIDESHOW: TOP DEMOCRATS RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT IN 2020

The White House released the transcript of the July 25 phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky last week. The record reveals Trump pressured Zelensky to investigate Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden for alleged corruption, and clearly shows Trump’s use of the word “favor.” Schiff and other House Democratic leaders have since said they plan to launch a formal impeachment inquiry against Trump, arguing he abused his power by enlisting a foreign government to get dirt on his opponent in the 2020 election. Trump had called his conversation with Zelensky “perfect” and repeatedly accused Democrats and the media of grossly misrepresenting the nature of his discussion with Ukraine’s president.

Schiff previously served as a prosecutor who has impeached several federal judges.
