Trump Mocks Rep. Elijah Cummings After Burglary At Democratic Congressman’s Home In Baltimore: “Too Bad!”

On Friday, President Donald Trump responded to reports about a robbery at Rep. Elijah Cummings‘s (D-Maryland)’s house in Baltimore by seemingly mocking the Democratic House Oversight Committee chairman for misfortune.

“Really bad news! The Baltimore house of Elijah Cummings was robbed. Too bad!” Trump tweeted Friday morning.

Cummings’ home was robbed on Saturday, July 27. It remains unknown exactly which of the congressman’s belongings were stolen.

Cummings told The Baltimore Sun in a statement Friday that he “was notified of the intrusion by my security system, and I scared the intruder away by yelling before the person gained entry into the residential portion of the house.”

Late last month, Trump famously called Cummings “racist” and a “brutal bully” on Twitter while blasting Baltimore, a predominantly African-American city, as a “disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess.” The Sun and several other local news outlets rebuked the president for his remarks.

Cummings has recently been leading several investigations into Trump and his administration.

Trump also falsely claimed that Baltimore’s Democratic elected officials have “stolen or wasted” billions of dollars in federal aid to the city.

Many Democrats and a few Republicans, including former ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley and Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Illinois), condemned the president for his comments.

Trump told the media while leaving the White House on Friday that he wasn’t trying to disparage Cummings with his tweet about the house burglary.

“The tweet itself was just really a repeat of what I heard over the news,” the president told reporters. “I know his house was robbed. And I thought that was too bad. That was really just — that really was not meant as a wise guy tweet.”
