Former President Donald Trump has endorsed former football star Herschel Walker for Georgia’s Senate race in the upcoming midterm election next year.

“Herschel Walker is a friend, a Patriot, and an outstanding American who is going to be a GREAT United States Senator. He embodies ‘America First’ and the winning spirit of Georgia. Herschel is tough on Crime and Borders, and he will always stand in support of Law Enforcement, Military, and our Vets,” Trump said in a statement published via Save America PAC.

“He will fight hard for our Second Amendment and Voter Integrity. Herschel Walker will never let you down. He was a great football player and will be an even better U.S. Senator – if that is even possible. He has my Complete and Total Endorsement!”

Trump has been encouraging Walker, an outspoken supporter of the former president, to consider running for senator in Georgia against Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-Georgia).

“I think he’d win. I think it would be very, very hard to beat Herschel,” Trump said. “They have the ballads, they made ballads to Herschel. They still sing them all the time. So I think beating him would be very tough. And I think he’s going to run,” Trump said back in July when a former footballer hinted that he may run for Georgia.

Walker eventually declared his bid for a Senate run as a Republican last week.

“THANK YOU to my friend President Trump for your support and encouragement! Together, we will win back the U.S. Senate for GEORGIA!!” Walker tweeted shortly after Trump announced his endorsement.

Walker appeared at last year’s GOP convention where he endorsed Trump for his re-election bid.

“I take that as a personal insult, that people would think I’ve had a 37-year friendship with a racist,” Herschel said during his Republican National Convention speech last year. “People don’t know what they’re talking about. Growing up in the deep South, I’ve seen racism up close. I know what it is. And it isn’t Donald Trump.”
