Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) said in an interview Tuesday that former President Donald Trump will continue to play a major role in the Republican party. Romney also said that if Trump runs again in 2024 he was “pretty sure he will win the [GOP] nomination.”

“I look at the polls,” said Romney. “And the polls show that among the names being floated as potential contenders in 2024, if you put President Trump in there among Republicans, he wins in a landslide.”

Romney is the only Republican senator who voted to convict Trump in both of his impeachment trials. As time distances from Trump’s trial and the Capitol insurrection, the Republican congressional leadership has slowly leaned back into the former president’s fold. Both House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-California) and House Minority Whip Steve Scalise (R-Louisiana) have privately met with Trump at his Palm Beach gold club after he left office. Scalise recently received heavy criticism for deploying Trump-style deception during an interview February where he refused to acknowledge Joe Biden legitimately won the 2020 presidential election.
