MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow broke down in tears at the end of her Tuesday night program while attempting to share what is happening to young migrant children taken from their parents at the border.

Maddow’s reaction reflected the emotionally-charged atmosphere surrounding the border crisis. Under the Trump administration, more than 2,300 children have been taken from parents caught illegally crossing the U.S.-Mexico border. While parents are taken to be criminally prosecuted, children are taken to detention facilities.

“The AP has just broken some news,” Maddow had said, struggling to read the first few lines of the report, which described how toddlers were being detained. “This is incredible.”

“Trump administration officials have been sending babies and other young children forcibly separated from their parents at the U.S.-Mexico border to at least three ‘tender age’ facilities in South Texas,” the AP reported.

Choking back tears, Maddow first asked her producer to display a graphic before abruptly ending her segment.

“I think I’m going to have to hand this off, I’m sorry,” she said.

Maddow later apologized on Twitter and shared the story again.
