Former South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg is narrowly leading Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont) in the early vote count of the Iowa caucuses, 26.9 to 25.1%, with 62% of precincts reporting. The results were delayed after a new app used by Iowa Democratic Party (IDP) malfunctioned. Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) placed third with 18.3%. Former Vice President Joe Biden placed a distant fourth with 15.6%.
“It’s extraordinary,” Buttigieg told CNN. “It also, I hope, means something to a lot of people wondering if they fit in, people who are different, people who don’t know if they belong in their community or in their family. This is a proof that you can believe in yourself and in your country.”
