N.J. Rep. Jeff Van Drew Switches To GOP, Promises ‘Undying Support’ To Trump

President Donald Trump welcomed New Jersey Rep. Jeff Van Drew to the Republican Party on Thursday after the former Democrat switched sides and joined the GOP.

He pledged his “undying support” for Trump and said, “This is just a better fit for me. This is who I am.”

This comes one day after Van Drew voted against both articles of impeachment.

Van Drew’s switch was sort of expected, having a history of differences with the Democratic Party. Elected as a Democrat in 2018, some questioned if he could win a second race with the party.

Trump endorsed Van Drew calling him “highly respected” and Vice President Mike Pence and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy put support behind Van Drew as well.

From the Democrats, Van Drew has been swiftly removed out of the Democratic Caucus.

In a two-sentence letter to Van Drew, Democratic Caucus Chairman, Rep. Hakeem Jeffries of New York, said, “Pursuant to Rule 1 of the House Democratic Caucus, membership is automatically relinquished upon resignation from the Democratic Party. In accordance with that Rule, you are no longer a Member of the House Democratic Caucus effective immediately.”

Calling the decision “shameful,” House Majority PAC, a super PAC dedicated to electing Democrats, requested Van Drew return a $2,500 donation from them.
