#Midnight Mitch Trends On Twitter As Democrats Criticize McConnell’s Late Senate Hearing Hours

Democrats attacked Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell after he released a resolution setting out the schedule for President Donald Trump‘s impeachment trial, which would expedite the process and call for late nights, along with the possible omission of new witnesses and evidence.

The Democrats took to Twitter after McConnell’s four-page resolution had been released causing the term “#MidnightMitch” to trend.

McConnell had released a blueprint with guidelines and regulations for the speedy trial, without consulting Democrats.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called the trial blueprint a “national disgrace.” He accused McConnell of “attempting to hide information and evidence from the American people,” with his push for a fast trial.

Schumer noted that McConnell had reiterated that the rules and regulations revolving around Trump’s impeachment trial would parallel those enforced in President Bill Clinton‘s 1999 trial, and then went on to state that McConnell was “hell-bent” on suppressing evidence and “rushing the trial through.”

“Senator McConnell’s proposed rules depart dramatically from the Clinton precedent—in ways that are designed to prevent the Senate and the American people from learning the full truth about President Trump’s actions that warranted his impeachment,” Schumer claimed in an online statement.

Schumer then registered a complaint that the trial rules do not even allow the simple task of including the House record as evidence. Under the resolution, Trump could be acquitted as early as next week before his Feb. 4 State of the Nation address.

“A trial with no evidence—no existing record, no witnesses, no documents—isn’t a trial at all. It’s a cover-up, and the American people will see it for exactly what it is,” Schumer stated.

“Furthermore, Senator McConnell’s resolution stipulates that key facts be delivered in the wee hours of the night simply because he doesn’t want the American people to hear them. Any senator that votes for the McConnell resolution will be voting to hide information and evidence from the American people.”

Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Illinois), a Iraq War veteran, also accused McConnell of attempting to plan a “cover-up,” tweeting:

Harvard University constitutional law Prof. Laurence Tribe noted that the rules would skew the outcome by suppressing evidence.
