Majority Of House Members Support Trump Impeachment Inquiry After Ukraine Scandal [FULL LIST]

More than half of all members of the U.S. House of Representatives now say they support an impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump.

Two hundred-twenty lawmakers from Congress’s lower chamber have said as of Thursday afternoon that they back the start of impeachment proceedings against Trump following his call to Ukraine’s president to obtain dirt on Joe Biden, his opponent in the 2020 election. The total number of House members who support the start of an investigation into the president now represents a majority of the 435-member chamber. The tally includes 219 Democrats and one independent, Rep. Justin Amash (I-Michigan), who was previously a Republican. In just the last three days, 75 lawmakers have said they back impeachment proceedings.

Although this marks a development in House Democrats’ efforts to remove the president from office, the Republican-controlled Senate led by Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky) is considered unlikely to support impeachment proceedings. It also does not necessarily entail that Trump will be charged with high crimes and misdemeanors, as the constitution does not specifically define what types of offenses can be labeled as such.

Trump’s phone conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, which came on July 25 just days after Trump pulled military aid to the country, sparked a call for an impeachment inquiry from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-California) on Tuesday. On Thursday, acting National Intelligence Director Joeseph Maguire testified before a congressional committee about a whistleblower who accused Trump of using his interactions with Zelensky for political gain in a now-released complaint.
