House Republicans Draft Impeachment Articles Against Rod Rosenstein

A group of conservative Republicans in the House of Representatives have drafted impeachment articles against Justice Department deputy secretary Rod Rosenstein, who is overseeing the special counsel’s Russia probe.

The Washington Post first obtained the documents, called a “last resort” by one of its writers. It was created by members of the House Freedom Caucus, which is headed by North Carolina Republican Representative Mark Meadows.

The articles are unlikely to pass, as impeaching federal officials is extremely difficult, requiring a two-thirds vote in the Senate. Additionally, the move would be unpopular with both Republicans and Democrats, as members of both parties have said special counsel Robert Mueller and Rosenstein, should be allowed to carry out their investigation without interference.

President Donald Trump himself has reportedly considered firing Rosenstein to weaken Mueller’s Russia probe, especially after becoming angry with the FBI’s raid of Cohen’s hotel, office and home. However, when asked recently if he would fire either of them, Trump simply said, “They are still here.”
