George Papadopoulos Starts 14-Day Prison Sentence For Lying To FBI About Trump-Russian Contacts

George Papadopoulosa former campaign adviser to President Donald Trumpwas ordered to start a two-week prison sentence on Monday for making false statements to the FBI regarding his contacts with Russian government officials during the 2016 election.

In October 2017, the 31-year-old former foreign policy adviser became the first Trump aide to plead guilty in the investigation into Russian interference in the election and potential collusion between Trump campaign officials and the Kremlin. In August, special counsel Robert Mueller recommended a prison sentence of up to six months for Papadopoulos.

According to CNN, Papadopoulos will now be on probation for one year as part of his 14-day prison sentence, and he will also be fined $9,500 and forced to participate in community service. He will be held at a federal facility in Oxford, Wisconsin.

“The truth will all be out. Not even a prison sentence can stop that momentum,” Papadopoulos tweeted on Sunday evening. “The wool isn’t going to be pulled over America’s eyes forever. Much love.”

Papadopoulos’s conviction was reportedly revealed the same day Mueller’s team announced their case against Trump’s former campaign chairman Paul Manafort and his deputy Rick Gates.

Among the Russians with whom Papadopoulos communicated was a woman who claimed to be Russian President Vladimir Putins niece.

Papadopoulos’s wife, Simona Mangiante Papadopoulos, has reportedly begged Trump to pardon her husband for his offense. Neither the president nor other White House officials have thus far explicitly stated that the former adviser may be pardoned.

Thus far this year, the Justice Department has charged 26 Russian individuals for trying to meddle in U.S. elections.
