The White House Counsel Pat Cipollone’s letter to three House Committee Chairpersons and Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-California) is continuing to generate strong reactions. Conservative lawyer George Conway, who is married to White House Counselor Kellyanne Conway, has weighed in on the issue. Conway described Cipollone’s letter as “garbage” and observed that the letter itself constitutes grounds for impeachment. Conway stated that Cipollone’s letter almost “guarantees” President Donald Trump’s impeachment in a podcast discussion with the former U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara.

Conway disputed the letter’s chief argument that the House of Representatives was mandated to formally vote before opening impeachment proceedings. Conway dismissed Cipollone’s assertion as utter “nonsense.”

Conway said the only thing the Constitution says is that the House of Representatives has sole power over impeachment. On Bharara’s podcast, Stay Tuned with Preet, Conway also said the White House’s stand of not cooperating with the House impeachment inquiry was a “disgrace” to the nation, the institution of the presidency — and also the legal profession.

The impeachment proceedings, which were triggered by a whistle-blower’s revelations that President Trump pressured Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to investigate a political rival, former Vice President Joe Biden, have been described by Trump and his supporters as an effort by the Democrats to overturn the people’s mandate. Trump has openly declared his refusal to engage in any manner with the impeachment inquiry.
