The estranged husband of Katie Hill, the former Democratic California congresswoman who recently resigned from her position amid a nude photo scandal, told his parents he thought he was hacked before the images were distributed.
It is unclear what role Hill’s husband, Kenny Heslep, played in the scandal that caused her resignation. It began on Oct. 10 when the conservative website Redstate published nude photos of her and alleged that she had been in a sexual relationship with a female staffer on her campaign, as well as a male director in her office.
In a video to supporters, Hill called the publication of the nude photos a “coordinated campaign carried out by right-wing media and Republican operatives,” as well as her “abusive husband,” Kenny Heslep.
According to a statement, she chose to resign “so that the good people who supported me will no longer be subjected to the pain inflicted by my abusive husband and the brutality of hateful political operatives who seem to happily provide a platform to a monster who is driving a smear campaign built around cyber exploitation.”

Kenny’s father, Fred Heslep, said that despite the couples’ marital issues, his son did not distribute the images.
“He was hacked is what he says,” Fred Heslep told Buzzfeed News. He added, “I think he started having computer issues, so that’s what made him think it was a hacking.”
He also said that Kenny had nothing to do with the publication of the images, but did not report the supposed hacking to authorities.
RedState also published one of Kenny’s Facebook posts, which he has since deleted. In the post, he ranted about Hill and claimed she was having an affair with her male legislative director. In court filings for the divorce, he did not allege any extramarital affair. However, his claimed prompted the Ethics Committee to launch an investigation into Hill.
Kenny Heslep has been silent as the Hill scandal developed. Hill is certain she is a victim of “revenge porn,” and has enlisted Capitol police to investigate the origins of the photos.
