Donald Trump Praises Lake Norman Golf Courses While Visiting Hurricane Florence Victims In North Carolina

On Wednesday, President Donald Trump asked about the condition of a North Carolina lake adjacent to one of his golf courses while visiting victims of Hurricane Florence in the state.

Trump was inquiring about Lake Norman near Charlotte. One of the president’s National Golf Clubs is located beside it. The president also took a moment to praise the course, calling the area surrounding it one of the best in the nation. Trump himself also received compliments from state officials for his response to the storm, which has now killed 37 people.

“How is Lake Norman doing?” Trump asked an energy official on Wednesday. “I love that area. I can’t tell you why, but I love that area.”

Trump also recently described Hurricane Florence as “one of the wettest we’ve ever seen, from the standpoint of water.”

Last month, the president reportedly claimed falsely that Lake Norman was the largest artificial lake in the world.

“I actually have investments in Charlotte,” Trump stated. “They’ll say, ‘Oh, that’s a conflict of interest.’ Fake news, they’ll say this is a conflict of interest. You know where my club is, right? Trump National. It’s a very big success on Lake Norman. Beautiful. Largest man-made lake in the world by far, right?”

Trump has made similarly insensitive comments amid natural disasters or other types of tragedies before. Following the violent clashes between white supremacists and counter-protesters in Charlottesville, Virginia last year, the president mentioned that he owns a winery in the town.

High winds and nearly three feet of rain have hit North Carolina and other Mid-Atlantic states since Florence first made landfall earlier this month, and more flooding is expected in many areas. Thousands of people are still in shelters because of the storm.
