On Sunday, President Donald Trump lashed out at Special Counsel Robert Mueller and his Russia investigations, calling it “McCarthyism” — a reference to Senator Joseph R. McCarthy’s persecution of suspected communist sympathizers in the 1950s,.

The president’s comparison of the special counsel’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election and the trials of McCarthyism was just one part of Trump’s Twitter storm on Sunday. In addition, he blamed Mueller, saying he made McCarthy “look like a baby” and called the entire probe a “Witch Hunt” again. The president also called the New York Times “fake news,”  for its story on White House Counsel Don McGahn.

Trump referred to an article in The Times, published on Saturday that said McGahn had participated in interviews over 30 hours during the last nine month. McGahn may have provided Mueller with more information against Trump than was previously known.

McGahn’s lawyer, William A. Burck, said that McGahn had been obliged to cooperate with the special counsel. “President Trump, through counsel, declined to assert any privilege over Mr. McGahn’s testimony, so Mr. McGahn answered the special counsel team’s questions fulsomely and honestly, as any person interviewed by federal investigators must,” he said.
