Donald Trump Calls Rep. Maxine Waters “Low IQ Person”

On Monday evening, President Donald Trump said Congresswoman Maxine Waters’ is a “low IQ person” and should “be careful” after the Democratic representative called on supporters to publicly confront politicians in all contexts to protest Trump’s immigration policy.

The tweet comes in response to Waters’ speech during a rally in L.A. The congresswoman voiced her opposition to the recent immigration policy and called for families to be reunited. To make this possible, Waters encouraged supporters to put pressure on White House officials by confronting them in public areas.

“Let’s make sure we show up wherever we have to show up. And if you see anybody from that Cabinet in a restaurant, in a department store, at a gasoline station, you get out and you create a crowd,” Waters told the audience. “And you push back on them. And you tell them they’re not welcome anymore, anywhere.”

The call to action comes in the wake of White House officials increasingly being called out by protestors in public areas. The most recent incident involved White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders who was denied service at a restaurant in Lexington, Virginia, on Friday. When asked about her decision to refuse service, the restaurant owner stated, “This feels like the moment in our democracy when people have to make uncomfortable actions and decisions to uphold their morals.”

Not all have been as supportive as Waters about the pushback. While Democrats have traditionally blamed Trump and his supporters for making public discourse hostile, they fear Waters’ fiery comments may turn the tables against them. On Monday, David Axelrod, former Senior Advisor under the Obama administration tweeted,

With midterm elections just around the corner, Democrats fear Waters’ comments will instead reenergize Trump’s base supporters to get out and vote. Officials, including House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, also believe Waters’ remarks are another troubling example of the growing lack of civility within public discourse.
