A hearing date for Brett Kavanaugh and Christine Blasey Ford was selected earlier this week. Senate Republicans invited both parties to appear before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Sept. 24 and testify under oath regarding Ford’s accusations of sexual assault.
However, on Tuesday, Ford’s lawyers confirmed that their client wants the FBI to investigate President Donald Trump‘s latest Supreme Court nominee before she agrees to testify.
Decades ago when the two were high school students, Kavanaugh allegedly was drunk at a party and forcibly tried to remove Ford’s clothing while covering her mouth with his hand. She also alleges that another man, Mark Judge, aided Kavanaugh’s assault.
Kavanaugh denied these claims, and many Republicans – including Trump — have rushed to defend him. Although the Republican party is in control of the Senate, it isn’t by a wide margin, meaning enough swing votes could block the 53-year-old’s nomination.

SLIDESHOW: DONALD TRUMP’S 30 CRAZIEST TWEETS
Ford’s legal team wrote to Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), the Judiciary Committee chairman, saying, “A full investigation by law enforcement officials will ensure that the crucial facts and witnesses in this matter are assessed in a non-partisan manner, and that the committee is fully informed before conducting any hearing or making any decisions.”
Grassley, however, remains unconvinced, writing, “Dr. Ford’s testimony would reflect her personal knowledge and memory of events. Nothing the FBI or any other investigator does would have any bearing on what Dr. Ford tells the committee, so there is no reason for any further delay.” As it stands, the hearing is still scheduled for Sept. 24.
