Bernie Sanders’ Campaign Breaks Record With $6 Million In Donations On Its First Day

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) formally announced his 2020 presidential campaign Tuesday morning, emphasizing a progressive platform centered around income inequality and racial injustice.

Sanders was unable to secure the Democratic nomination in his first White House bid, but he nevertheless enjoyed fervent support from his supporters, who seem to have retained their enthusiasm for him. According to Sanders’ campaign, they received over $5.9 million within one day of Sanders’ announcement, passing $6 million shortly after the 24 hour mark.

Over 225,000 individual people have contributed to the Vermont senator within his first day of campaigning, on average donating only $27 each. This parallels the similar donation size he averaged during his 2016 bid. However, his first day gross for his second run greatly exceeds the amount he received on the first day of his last run, which was only $1.5 million.

Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.), who announced her 2020 campaign last month, raised about $1.5 million on her first day. Other senators, namely Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Cory Booker (D-N.J.), have not divulged any fundraising numbers yet. However, Warren did fundraise $299,000 on the day she announced she was establishing an exploratory committee for herself.

Whoever becomes the Democratic nominee will challenge incumbent president Donald Trump, who currently has a war chest of $19 million according to his latest FEC filing.
