According to a study published March 17 in The New England Journal of Medicine, the novel coronavirus lasted the longest on plastic and stainless steel surfaces — upwards of 72 hours.

On other surfaces, such as cardboard, the virus vanished much quicker (in about 24 hours for cardboard). Researchers also found that the virus can stay airborn for about half an hour before it drifts down and settles on a surface top. Traditional disinfectant has been shown to be effective in eliminating the virus from any surface area.
