Former President of the Philippines Rodrigo Duterte was arrested in Manila on March 11, after the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued a warrant for his arrest for crimes against humanity during his severe “war on drugs.” According to the Philippines’ Presidential Communications Office, the former leader was detained by police after arriving in Manila from Hong Kong on Tuesday morning. Footage from Duterte’s daughter, Veronica, shows the former president questioning his arrest while being held in Villamor Airbase in Manila. “What is the law? And what is the crime that I committed?” Duterte asks in the footage. “Show to me now the legal basis for my being here.” The ICC has been investigating Duterte since September 2021, on the basis that thousands of people were unlawfully and systemically killed during anti-drug operations. In 2021, Duterte threatened to jail people who refuse to take the Covid-19 vaccine. (Credit: Veronica Duterte via Storyful)
