VIDEO EXCLUSIVE: 2020 Democratic Presidential Candidate Marianne Williamson On Gun Control

Gun violence continues to be a subject of intense debate among the American public, especially in the wake of mass shootings all across the country like last month’s massacres in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio.

Self-help author Marianne Williamsona 2020 Democratic presidential candidate, spoke to uPolitics exclusively about her views on common sense gun reform.

Williamson, 67, said she would begin by mandating universal background checks, closing gun show loopholes and banning bump stocks — additions that essentially turn a semi-automatic rifle into a fully automatic weapon. This type of accessory was used by the shooter in the Las Vegas music festival massacre in October 2017, the largest mass shooting in modern American history where 59 people were killed, including the perpetrator.

The New York Times best-selling self-help author also specified how far she would go in banning the sale of assault rifles.

“We need to outlaw the AR-15s, but you know what? Even if we — and when we — outlaw them, there will be so many millions [more] on the street, so we need to stop selling the ammunition,” said Williamson.

Williamson specifically proposed a solution for gun reform that involved properly identifying ammunition.

“I do think serial numbers on bullets are a good idea,” she said. “The bullet could always be identified.”

Williamson also commented on the support for requirements regarding firearm registrations by saying she understood minorities’ concern that this type of legislation would disproportionately affect them.

“I understand how people of color particularly go, ‘No, we don’t want that done’ because they understandably do not wish to see a database somewhere where law enforcement can see who has the guns,” she added.

More recently, politicians and pundits have also revived the discussion surrounding “red flag” laws. These types of regulations allow people or law enforcement to demand a court order to remove firearms from the possession of anybody who is deemed to be a danger to themselves or to others.
