President Donald Trump tweeted Saturday that a third summit with North Korea’s Kim Jong Un “would be good,” adding that he anticipates the day the repressive state becomes “one of the most successful nations of the World.”
The president’s message followed a speech by Kim in which the leader presented the U.S. with a deadline of “the end of this year” for moving negotiations between the two countries forward.
“I agree with Kim Jong Un of North Korea that our personal relationship remains very good, perhaps the term excellent would be even more accurate,” Trump wrote. “A third summit would be good in that we fully understand where we each stand.”

“North Korea has tremendous potential for…extraordinary growth, economic success and riches under the leadership of Chairman Kim,” the president continued.
Kim said Saturday he is also open to another summit with his American counterpart, according to a report by North Korea’s state-run media.
“If the U.S. adopts a correct posture and comes forward for the third DPRK-U.S. summit with a certain methodology that can be shared with us, we can think of holding more talks,” Kim said, referring to his nation’s official name, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.
But if the U.S. “persists in its present political calculation method,” the North Korean leader warned that “the prospect of settling the issues will gloomy and very dangerous.”
Kim’s speech came hours after Trump and visiting South Korean President Moon Jae-in met in Washington and agreed on the importance of nuclear talks with North Korea.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said earlier this month he is “confident there will be” another meeting between Trump and Kim, after an abrupt end to the leaders’ unproductive meeting in Vietnam in February.
The leaders met to discuss a deal meant to denuclearize North Korea, but that summit ended early with both sides blaming the other for the lack of progress.
