Poll Says 51% Of Americans Support Removing Trump From Office

According to a new CNN poll conducted by SSRS, 51% of Americans favor the Senate removing President Donald Trump from office, while 45% say the Senate should vote against it.

Nearly 70% of survey-takers say that the upcoming trial should have testimony from new witnesses who did not testify in the House impeachment inquiry. Democrats need four Republicans to vote in their favor in order to ensure witnesses at the trial.

The poll also found that a majority of Americans view each of the articles of impeachment Trump has been accused of to be true. 58% say they believe Trump abused the power of the presidency and 57% say they believe it is true that he obstructed the House in its impeachment inquiry.

This is the first major national telephone poll since the articles of impeachment were sent to the Senate last week, formally launching Trump’s trial.

The divide in the Senate, however, is much more stark.  89% of Democrats believe Trump should be removed from office, while just 8% of Republicans agree. 48% of independents say the Senate should vote to remove him, while 46% say that they should not.

There are also extensive divisions in the poll based on race and gender. 59% of women say Trump should be removed from office, while only 42% of men agree. 89% of African Americans believe the Senate should vote to remove the president, while 65% of Hispanics and only 42% of whites agree. Overall, nearly six in 10 Americans disapprove of Trump’s handling of impeachment at 57%.
