Elizabeth Warren Passes Bernie Sanders For Second Place In Two New 2020 Polls

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Massachusetts) could become a stronger 2020 presidential contender, according to two new primary polls published Wednesday.

An Economist/YouGov survey places Warren ahead of fellow progressive Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) 16 percent to 12 percent. Former Vice President Joe Biden remains the 2020 Democratic frontrunner with 26 percent backing.

In a Nevada poll, Warren leads Sanders by 6 points (19 percent vs. 13 percent). A Monmouth survey has Biden leading Democratic support in the state with 36 percent.

Although 77-year-old Sanders remains in second place in many other national polls, Warren has seen her support jump slightly after rolling out several new policies on issues ranging from abortion to holding major corporations responsible for financial fraud and corrupt practices. Warren was one of several 2020 Democratic candidates to visit Iowa, the site that kicks of the presidential primary season, this week.

Warren has also reportedly sought to diversify her staff by including more Latinos in an attempt to reach out to more predominantly Hispanic areas.

Another 2020 Democratic contender who is also gaining steam and inching closer to Warren is Sen. Kamala Harris (D-California), who is within 2 percentage points or less of her Massachusetts counterpart, according to some polls.

The Economist/YouGove poll also showed that 20 percent of participants said they would be upset to see Sanders or New York Mayor Bill de Blasio become the 2020 presidential Democratic nominee, while only 9 percent said they hope Warren doesn’t become the party’s nominee. In total, 19 percent of respondents said the same about Biden. This survey was conducted June 9-11 among 1,500 adults. It holds a margin of error of plus or minus 2.6 percent.
