In 2017, President Donald Trump’s then-Press Secretary Sean Spicer declared that Trump’s inauguration had “the largest audience to ever witness an inauguration.” Photos later revealed that the audience was far smaller than previous years.
Now, after Trump has been voted out to be replaced by President-elect Joe Biden, he is pushing legal efforts to demand a recount of votes in multiple states.
On Saturday, his current Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany tweeted that there were “more than one MILLION marchers” in Washington D.C. for a rally in support of Trump’s claims that he won the presidency.

Just like Spicer in 2017, McEnany was off by a large factor. Even Trump himself tweeted Saturday that there were only tens of thousands of people in attendance, opposed to McEnany’s claim of over a million.
“The only tragedy about the lie about crowd size is he’s always capable of finding people willing to lie for him, said Trump’s former communication director-turned-Trump-critic Anthony Scaramucci.
This is not the only lie that sees parallels from 2016. Trump claimed in 2016 that Hillary Clinton had stolen the popular vote, just as he’s now claiming that Biden stole the entire “rigged” election.
“RIGGED ELECTION. WE WILL WIN!” wrote Trump on Twitter. “He only won in the eyes of the FAKE NEWS MEDIA. I concede NOTHING! We have a long way to go. This was a RIGGED ELECTION!”
Trump’s own Department of Homeland Security officials stated this week that the was the “most secure” election in U.S. history.
“The common thread is these are all attacks on objective reality and facts, whether you’re talking about rigging the election or crowd sizes of the nature of the public challenges in front of us,” said senior columnist for Bloomberg Opinion, Tim O’Brien. “It is a core operating principle of Trumpism. If you constantly attack objective reality, you are left as the only trustworthy source of information, which is one of his goals for his relationship with his supporters-that they should believe no one else but him.”
