Watch: Chief Justice John Roberts Scolds Impeachment Managers And Trump Defense [Video]

Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts admonished House impeachment managers and White House defense lawyers for their uncivil behavior during the 13-hour Senate session Wednesday which finalized the impeachment rules.

“I think it is appropriate at this point for me to admonish both the House managers and president’s counsel in equal terms to remember that they are addressing the world’s greatest deliberative body,” Roberts said. “Those addressing the Senate should remember where they are.”

Roberts’s comment came after Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-New York) accused Republican senators of voting for a “cover-up.”

“History will judge and so will the electorate,” he said.

White House counsel Pat Cipollone rebuked Nadler’s remark.

“The only one who should be embarrassed, Mr. Nadler, is you for the way you’ve addressed this body,” Cipollone said. “This is the United States Senate. You’re not in charge here.”

The organizing resolution establishing the rules for the trial was passed in a 53-47 party-line vote. It does not guarantee the ability to call witnesses, much to Nadler’s dismay.
