WATCH: Biden Delivers Victory Speech In Hometown Of Wilmington, Delaware

After being declared the winner of the election and the 46th president of the United States, Joe Biden gave his first speech as president-elect on Saturday night. Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris addressed the American people from the Chase Center in Wilmington, Delaware, where many locals attended from their cars.

Harris, the first female, first black and first South Asian person to be elected as vice president first took the podium in an all-white pantsuit, in a tribute to the suffragists who fought for a woman’s right to vote. In her speech, she honored all the women who paved the way for her and for those who were able to cast their ballots in this election. “I reflect on their struggle, their determination and the strength of their vision, to see what can be, unburdened by what has been,” she said. “I stand on their shoulders.” Harris also expressed gratitude to Biden and his family, thanking the President-elect and his wife, Jill Biden, “for welcoming our family into theirs on this incredible journey.” And she acknowledged that “while I may be the first woman in this office, I will not be the last.”

When Biden took the stage, he first reassured his supporters that they have delivered “a clear victory, a convincing victory.” Biden pointed to the fact that he “won with the most votes ever cast in the presidential election in the history of the nation – 74 million.” He said that as president, fighting the coronavirus would be a top priority, and he also pledged to fight for healthcare and racial justice. Biden plans to govern as a president “who does not see red states and blue states, but only sees the United States.” And he vowed to “work with all my heart to win the confidence of the whole people.”
