DES MOINES, IOWA - JANUARY 14: Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) speak as Tom Steyer looks on after the Democratic presidential primary debate at Drake University on January 14, 2020 in Des Moines, Iowa.
Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Massachusetts) appeared to refuse a handshake from Sen. Bernie Sanders (D-Vermont) after Tuesday night’s Democratic debate.
The most interesting part of the night didn’t happen during the debate, but afterwards, while the candidates exchanged handshakes. Warren approached Sanders, and Sanders reached out his hand for her to shake. Instead, Warren and Sanders appeared to get into a heated exchange.

This comes after a CNN report, which Warren has stood by, claimed Sanders told Warren in a private meeting in 2018 that he didn’t believe a woman could win the election. Sanders has fervently denied he ever made such a statement.
News of the 2018 meeting surfaced after Politico reported Sanders was sending his campaign volunteers to attack Warren, something he’s also denied.
Neither campaign has addressed the incident or what was said.
