Virginia Democratic Voter Turnout Surges In 2020 Primary, Almost Double 2016 Levels

Voter turnout in the Virginia Democratic primary surged from 2016. With 100 percent of precincts reporting, 1,324,325 people had cast their ballot in Virginia, compared to the approximate 780,000 people who did the same in 2016.

In 2008, voter turnout hovered just below 990,000.

Former Vice President Joe Biden easily won Virginia’s Super Tuesday contest with 53.2% of the vote, earning 66 delegates in the process.

Virginia was not the only state to see an uptick in voter turnout, indicating that the general populous was more interested and invested in this election cycle.
