Florida Sen. Marco Rubio (R) has tried to distance former President Donald Trump from the controversial Project 2025.

Rubio, a potential vice president for Trump, discussed Project 2025 in an interview with CNN.

“Think tanks do think tank stuff,” Rubio said. “They come up with ideas, they say things. But our candidate for president is Donald Trump.”

He was specifically questioned about comments made by Project 2025 leader and Heritage Foundation President Kevin Roberts on Steve Bannon’s War Room. Roberts said that the “second American Revolution” would be bloodless “if the left allows it to be.”

Rubio continued by saying that Robert’s statement is not associated with Trump and does not represent him.

“Well, he’s not running for president, is he?” Rubio said. “Our candidate’s Donald Trump. I didn’t see Donald Trump say that.”

Rubio also said that while he agrees with some stances taken by the Heritage Foundation, they are simply a think tank doing what they are designed to do. He also stated that much of President Joe Biden’s policies are “ideological lunacy” from left-wing think tanks.

Trump has also aimed to distance himself from the controversial policies included in Project 2025, writing on social media, “I know nothing about Project 2025. I have no idea who is behind it.”

Numerous leaders in Project 2025 have also been associated with Trump’s presidency or candidacy, including Paul Dans, Ben Carson, John McEntee and Russ Vaught, who is helping write the Republican party’s platform ahead of the Republican National Convention.

Rubio also briefly discussed his interest in the vice presidency, stating that it was too early to discuss his choices should he be named Trump’s running mate.

“That’s presumptuous,” Rubio said. “I have no idea who he’s going to pick and those, like I said, we will confront those issues when they come.”
