Fox News host Tucker Carlson made bizarre suggestions that the U.S. should invade and “liberate” Canada.

During an interview with Canadian college professor David Azerrad, Carlson said that Trudeau was “authoritarian” and compared him to the late Cuban communist leader Fidel Castro. He said he wanted an invasion like the disastrous Bay of Pigs operation.

“I’m completely in favor of a Bay of Pigs operation to liberate that country,” he said. “Why should we stand back and let our biggest trading partner, the country with which we share the longest border, and actually, I’ll just say, a great country, I love Canada… why should we let it become Cuba?”

Carlson didn’t acknowledge that the Bay of Pigs operation is known as an epic failure, one of the worst in U.S. history.

Carlson has praised multiple authoritarian leaders in the past.

The Fox News host has interviewed Hungary’s president Victor Orbán, El Salvador’s president Nayib Bukele, Poland’s president Andrzej Duda and former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro. All of the leaders have actively played a hand in their country’s democratic backsliding, according to the Journal of Democracy.

Carlson recently said he was rooting for Russia in the conflict with Ukraine, before walking back the statement as a joke.

Carlson has also suggested an invasion of Mexico in order to curb immigration.
