Trump’s Lawyer Rudy Giuliani Compares Nancy Pelosi To Red Scare Sen. Joe McCarthy

President Donald Trump‘s personal attorney Rudy Giuliani attacked Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-California) on Sunday, likening her to 1950s Sen. Joseph McCarthy. McCarthy was famous for his baseless and fanatical attacks on many members of the government, accusing them of being communists and punishing them, often without a fair trial.

Giuliani took a page out of his employer’s book when he went on Twitter Sunday night to bash Pelosi for her comments about Trump. “She said nothing about a trial or a jury or a presumption of innocence,” said the lawyer. “They are destroying any adherence to our constitution.”

He also wrote later that day that Pelosi “doesn’t have a particular crime in mind just prison. If you can’t see she’s over the top, if not over the Hill, you are blinded by partisanship or hatred.”

Giuliani’s comments came after a closed Democratic meeting in which Pelosi reportedly said that she wanted Trump “in prison,” not impeached. The speaker’s statement was part of her attempt to dissuade House Democrats from beginning impeachment proceedings against the president, reasoning that if the Democrats just wait until Trump is voted out of office in 2020 then he will no longer have presidential powers, making him easier to charge and convict.

Last week Trump took to Twitter to blast Pelosi for her statement, calling her a “disgrace to herself and her family.”

Another Democratic House leader, Rep. David Cicilline (D-Rhode Island), backed up Pelosi’s comments about Trump. “It’s kind of rich to have the president complain about this when he began a campaign with ‘lock her up’ as his bumper sticker and led an effort to delegitimize the first African American president by claiming he wasn’t born in this country,” Cicilline said, mentioning the president’s various attacks on President Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.
