Former President Donald Trump and his adult children have run out of options in their efforts to dodge a subpoena and avoid testifying in New York Attorney Gen. Letitia James‘ investigation into the Trump Organization’s financial practices.
The New York court of appeals concluded that there was no “substantial constitutional question” that would cause them to step in. Trump, Ivanka Trump and Donald Trump Jr. agreed last week to begin testifying separately on July 15, but that date could be pushed back if the court decides to enact a stay of a judge’s order.
James opened an investigation into the Trump Organization’s business dealings and potential fraud in their valuation processes of real estate three years ago. So far, the investigation has found that statements used by outsiders to evaluate the financial condition of the organization are different from the ones the Trump Organization accountants received. James says that her probe has found that this valuation process has resulted in the ability to get loans and insurance and tax breaks.
The organization maintains that it did not do anything unlawful and Trump has called James’ investigation a “politically motivated witch hunt.”
