WASHINGTON, DC - MARCH 11: US President Donald Trump addresses the nation from the Oval Office about the widening Coronavirus crisis on March 11, 2020 in Washington, DC. President Trump said the US will suspend all travel from Europe - except the UK - for the next 30 days. Since December 2019, Coronavirus (COVID-19) has infected more than 109,000 people and killed more than 3,800 people in 105 countries
President Donald Trump proposed at a press briefing that citizens should wear scarves to prevent COVID-19 transmission if they can’t find a mask. Trump introduced the idea, as an alternative to face masks, as the country faces a nationwide deficit of masks.
Trump suggested that donning a scarf, as protective gear over one’s face, should give the same amount of protection as a medical mask would. “You know, you can use a scarf … a lot of people have scarves,” Trump said.
The president is backed up on this view by government experts. Several weeks ago, the Center for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) had issued a series of guidelines about the use of surgical masks — the organization instructed that only those infected or caring for those infected should wear masks. The recommendations said that citizens could substitute a scarf for a mask. Last week, the CDC said that all people should wear masks in public to help prevent the spread of disease.
