Trump Sues New York Prosecutors Over Subpoena Of 8 Years Of Personal & Corporate Taxes

President Donald Trump on Thursday filed a federal lawsuit against the Manhattan district attorney’s office after New York prosecutors subpoenaed eight years of his personal and corporate tax returns late last month.

According to several reports, Trump attorney Jay Sekulow said in a statement that the case surrounding Trump’s taxes contains “significant constitutional issues.”

Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance‘s office had requested multiple tax documents from Trump’s accounting firm, Mazars USA, and from the president’s main business, the Trump Organization. The subpoena seeks state and federal returns for both Trump and his company dating back to 2011.

New York prosecutors subpoenaed the records as part of a larger probe into Trump and his family’s involvement in hush-money payments made to the president’s mistresses in the months leading up to the 2016 election. The president and the Trump Organization both reimbursed Trump’s former personal lawyer Michael Cohen for a payment made to silence porn star Stormy Daniels, a woman with whom Trump had an extramarital affair.

Trump’s lawsuit against New York prosecutors is the latest of many concerning his taxes, a controversy that has dogged him since his 2016 campaign and that will likely continue as the 2020 election approaches. Last month, the president sued California over a law the state passed that requires presidential candidates to release their income tax returns in order to be eligible to appear on a primary ballot.

In April, Trump also sued House Democrats to block subpoenas for financial records from Mazars. Congressional Democrats have also pursued business documents from Capital One and Deutsche Bank, both of whom have loaned Trump money. The president also sued the pair of financial institutions earlier this year.

Trump is the first presidential in more than four decades to refuse to release his tax returns.
